I have a Pyro FW case with a the Oxford 911 chipset and a WD 120 GB Caviar drive in it. Everything is working fine, but the fan in that case is driving me crazy. My set-up is very quiet, so it's probably not even that loud, but it's been buggin' me and my bat-ears, so it's time to do something about it.

Here's the question: Can I just cut the fan leads and shut it off, or will this cause some problem with the drive? Anyone else done this, or something similar before?

Any comments regarding problems or potential problems would be appreciated!!

(This idea was kind of inspired by comments made in this thread, but the YMMV comment made me think about getting some more info before busting out the wire-cutters.)

Mine ( http://eshop.macsales.com/Catalog_It...em=OWCMEFWU2A6 ) runs without a fan but I can't tell you whether that would work for your enclosure. It might depend on whether the power adapter is inside the case (more heat) or is external.

The power supply on this case is external. However, I was reading somewhere else that running some cases with the fan off/disabled will cause the chipset to overheat if the drive is mounted for extended periods. (I have no idea what "extended" means, but I plan on leaving mine on 24/7, so I suspect that that will qualify as an extended period.)
