Hi this is a weird problem and I have gotten little help from either the cable company nor Apple (though I don't think it's their proble.) Anyway I have a Motorola Cable modem which connects via ethernet with no problems to an indigo imac running OS9.2.2. However I want to use my iBook on it (Dual USB OS X.2.6) with broadband and not the old machine, and whil it initially worked fine, it has ceased to work with the connection. The ethernet port is working (I can network to other computers....), and the IP, Sub-Mask etc show up in the network prefs....just no connection. What gives? The Cable company said that as far as they are concerned the connection is live and the problam must be with my iBook (they are not very mac savy but have been more than helpful!). Anybody any ideas??
I was thinking of maybe getting an Airport base station if it won't work (and nobody here has any ideas!)and setting it up on the iMac (of course I'll have to install Jaguar on it first...)
Any help appreciated!!

try unpluggin the cable modem for 30 seconds before you plug your ibook into it. cable modems are set to accept only one machine, and they remember that machine (its MAC address). when you unplug them, they usually forget (some of the fancier ones don't and need to be reset somehow, but yours doesn't sound like that).
another solution is to get a router. routers take connections like this (for one computer) and share it with multiple computers. routers can be pretty cheap ($40-$50) and are all mac compatible as long as they are ethernet (not usb). don't buy one of those multiple-computer packages from your cable internet company (if they have them yet) because they're a huge ripoff not only at first but also for the monthly charge they'll give you for it.

If you buy a router, both the Linksys and D-Link routers (even their cheapest models) have MAC address cloning.

If your cable company locks on to the MAC address of your main computer, you can just tell the router to clone that MAC address and use it with both machines.

I'm not sure how to tell the MAC address on System 9.2, but I know you can tell it in OS X by going to terminal and typing in 'ifconfig' and looking for a line that says ether and then has a series of numbers that looks like this:

00:00:00:00:00:00

But yours will have numbers and letters. The guys in the networking forum might be more of a help on this one, come to think of it.

x.

Can you recommend one? I'm a bit of a duffer at this stuff I'm afraid..I usually use the Apple store here in Ireland (there's not much else...) and the choice is a Belkin 8-port Ethernet Switch. Would this do the job or is there another you would recommend??
Thanks for replying...

Thanks for the replies. Okay I turned off the Motorola Modem (Model is SB4200E) and and unplugged it. I waited a minute and turned back on, with the cable plugged into the etthrnet on the iBook. No joy Also the iMac does not work either now, maybe because the modem "forgotten" that machine? It doesn't really matter because I really want it to work with the iBook... I remember the technician from the cable company saying something about it can take overnight for the modem to switch computers (I have tried that too...). Why would that be??
The only router that seems to be available on the Apple store is this one
http://catalog.belkin.com/IWCatProdu...duct_Id=113457
except it has eight ports. Is this any good for what I need (once I get this connection working?)
Thanks very much
