Here's a question- is it possible to remove the HD out of a malfunctioning Compaq notebook computer, stick the drive in a firewire enclosure, and then have the drive show up on the Mac and let me get files off of it? I know that the drive is being used by a Win XP system, and I guess that the formatting is NTFS.

My sister-in-law is probably going to have to return the computer, and can't start it up, so I thought that would be the best way to rescue her files. I've got an external drive that I put together when I upgraded my Ti, so I've already got the hardware.

I don't believe that 10.2 can read NTFS formatted disks.

Even the latest Linux distro's are only able to read (not write) NTFS, and some like RedHat leave that option out of the kernel due to, I believe, political reasons. In short, I think you're out of luck, but why not try it and see what happens, since you already have the hardware.

this is a good idea, but i'm pretty sure it won't work because of ntfs. if you can get your hands on another pc running win2k or xp, though, you should be in luck with the same idea (firewire or internally).
