Has anyone tried to force the updater to accept older iPods? Like changing some value in a .plist or so? What is the worst that could happen to my beloved companion if I try?

What's the worst that could happen? You could never be able to use your iPod again. I doubt that would actually happen, but you did ask for the worst.
