After months of comparison shopping we purchased a 6110.

However, as long as it is powered on the scanner light is illuminated. And it must be powered on to receive faxes. So, just sitting there it is wasting energy and creating considerable heat. I find this absurd and probably unacceptable as a primary fax machine.

My question for others with a 6110: is this your experience as well, or have I overlooked a setting or possibly received a malfunctioning unit?

Thanks

Well, if anyone is interested in this issue, HP provided the following information via email:

We understand from your e-mail that when your OfficeJet 6110 is idle, the scanning bulb remains on.

The OfficeJet 6110 is equipped with a Power Save Mode that would shut your scanner bulb off after a specified period of time. To access this on your unit, please follow the directions below.

1. Press the menu button on the front panel of the OfficeJet 6110.
2. Using the arrows, scroll through options until the display of the OfficeJet 6110 reads '7: Maintenance'. Press Enter.
3. Again, scroll through the options until the display of the printer shows '6: Set Power Save Mode Time'. Press Enter.
4. You can now set the Power Save Mode time to After 1 hour, 4 hours, 8 hours, or 12 hours. Once the desired time is displayed in the printer display window, press enter.

There will be a slight pause, and then the date and time will return to the display. Now, after the mount of time that you specified, the scanner bulb should shut itself off.
