AGAIN songs in iTunes have randomly disappeared from my iTunes lists as well as from my hard drive. Fortunately, a lot of these files are also on my iPod. There are applications that allow one to transfer song files from the iPod to the Mac. However, my preferences for the iPod are currently set to "auto update." If I plug the iPod into my Mac, it will "auto update" and erase the very files I wish to save. This will happen before I have a chance to change the preference setting to "manual update." Is there a way to abort "auto update" when I plug in the iPod, so that I can use one of these file transfer programs?

if you have your itunes open and then plug in the ipod you will see the ipod updating thing show up before it actually starts. there is the little circle with a x in it on the right side of the itunes display. click that before it starts.
