I was purchasing my G5 from the online applestore, when I went to select a monitor for my new machine. I was dreading this step because (as beautiful as they are) flat panels are all still very expensive. I never bothered to look at 3rd party options because I know Apple pulled some ADC stunt before where you could only use their monitors or something like that- I don't have time to research compatibility. But, to my suprise, there was an option in the pull-down menu not mentioned in the text off to the side: a Mitsubishi Diamond 17 monitor [black] for only 175$!!

I found this strange since none of the G4 towers I was looking at offered a non-Apple option. It looks like this is the configuration I will get- I sure hope this Mitsubishi thing can take advantage of Quartz Extreme.

I might be wrong but isn't Quartz like the apple version of PC's DirectX? A monitor only displays what he gets from the graphic card and to take advantage of Quartz Extreme you only need a graphic card that can handel Quartz Extreme. A monitor is a monitor. Only thing it might have trouble doing is displaying very fast images like games. But a TFT screen should be able to handel fast images if it has a response time of 20ms or lower.

And i don't think the mitsubishi monitor is a TFT screen. Think it's a regular CRT monitor

Yep, the monitor will only show what the computer tells it to...

Quartz Extreme revolves around the graphics card, nothing more. The monitor will make no difference.

The Mitsub monitor is indeed a CRT, and not too bad quality wise. In fact, the tube is a good one, and used in loads of other brands... well worth it if money is tight.

I think Apple may have put it on the page to tempt people with a cheaper 'package' price option after the actual G5 price increase...

Also, although the LCD/CRT colour difference for graphics work is ever decreasing, some people still prefer CRT... Perhaps Apple is just trying to cater for all eventualities?

Peace,

Marc

Sort of nuts, when you can get a great Sony 17" DVI/VGA LCD monitor for about $430.

What's a TFT? I didn't say it's a TFT did I? Whatever. I just know that my iMac DV 400 couldn't take advantage of QE and I thought it was because of the monitor. Oh well. Since price is a huge factor for me, I'm really happy with the Mitsubishi.

$430? Sounds high. Check http://www.techbargains.com/, http://www.gotapex.com/deals.php, FatWallet, Anandtech, etc. for the latest deals.

Yeah. Actually CRTs are usually more able to take advantage of it then LCDs

Mitsubishi CRTs are good ones too. My CRT of choice is still the FD/regular trinitron but they weigh a ton and cost more lol
In a realm beyond site, the sky shines gold, not blue, there the Triforce's might makes mortal dreams come true.

TFT means Thin Film Transistor. When people say "I saw a cheap TFT screen" it basically means a LCD monitor. TFT is just another name for LCD and flatpanel monitors.

You where so happy about the price of the Mitshubishi that i though that you thought it was a LCD screen. And 17" CRT screens aren't that expensive anymore. So i just though i'll warn you But you already know it's a CRT screen so my bad

You know that there's a DVI connection on the G5? There are lots of 17" LCD screens on the market for just around €500. I'm getting a LCD to for use with my PC and my upcomming Powerbook.

Ever since Apple stopped making CRT displays, they've sold third-party CRTs on the Education store. If you go through the "regular" Apple Store site, only Apple displays are offered.

Now, what possessed you to post this in the PowerBook forum?!? Pay attention next time!

Nope, they definitely sell Mitsubishi Diamond Pro monitors on the regular store. In the "Third Party Products" sidebar, click More then Displays.

I'll be damned, they sure do!

I never noticed, since they're buried so deep in the "regular" store. On the education store, the Mitsubishi monitors are listed in the G4/G5 custom configuration menus right alongside the Apple displays!

I'm sure they were listed on the extras page (you know, after you select your configurated system) at some point, too.

I was using the education store. I my order is saved, and from hearing what everyone is saying, I think I'll just buy my monitor from another vendor completely- since the DVI connection apparently means compatability won't be an issue.

Yeah, I got a DPro750SB from a third party vendor when I ordered my MDD, and saved a bit.
