Picked up a Canon i950 printer a few days ago and am very pleased with it. Have printed some 5x7 photos (taken with a 3 megapixel camera) with it and cannot distinguish them from lab prints. Anyway - didn't see too many comments on this printer so I thought I'd mention it in case someone is looking for a good printer.

Thanks for the info! I was actually contemplating replacing my Epson Stylus Photo 780 with a Canon, since Epson seems to be VERY slow (meaning: never gonna happen) to add borderless printing to their OS X driver, and the Canon OS X drivers seem to support it.

Can you comment on that? Does your i950 print borderless prints from, say, iPhoto pretty easily?

Thanks!

Canon's printers are definitely the best, especially for the price. I just picked up an i850 ($120 at Sam's Club ) and the prints it makes are just beautiful. Absolutely stunning. I can only imagine what the i950's prints look like.

Anyway, Canons rawk. The i850 rawks. The i950 rawks harder. I mean, come on:
  • The ink lasts forever. Coming off of an Epson, I'm amazed.
  • Best print quality. See above.
  • This thing is quiet. Seriously, I didn't even know it was printing at first.
  • Borderless prints from iPhoto work like a charm.

Best printer I've ever bought. Do it. Your computer will appreciate it.

I have the i850 and it's the best computer-related thing I've ever owned. I hook up the Canon s230, print on Canon photo paper and it's badass.

did I mention that I work for Canon? ;P

If someone else can confirm that Cannon printers save ink (compared to Epson) and that cheap replacement inks are available then I would love to switch. I have to do a lot of printing and I'm pissed with Epson!

Although regarding borderless printing, Epson has just updated their drivers. You can get it here. Of course I have been trying and have been unable to do so!

Another issue: I am unable to print double sided with my Epson 820 unless I do so manually (ie. printing two pages at a time, reinserting the last page to print on blank side). This is time consuming. Is this a feature missing in OS X or my printer?

There are very few inkjet printers that can physically turn the paper over themselves. It has nothing to do with drivers. AFAIK, at least.

It'd be cool though.

It's both, actually. The printer has to physically be able to do it, and the driver has to tell the printer to do it.

i850 here. A great allround printer. I moved to Canon from Epson and have not regretted it once.

I got an i850 2 weeks ago. I'm completely pleased.

Fast, really quiet (the noise from my air conditioner is enough to drown out the Canon!), and yeah, miserly with the ink!

I LOVE that it has auto-power-on/off (just like my ancient Apple Color StyleWriter Pro -- which was made by Canon).

Printing borderless photos is easy, but beware of aspect ratio: iPhoto always tries to make the whole photo fit, rather than cropping. So if your digital camera is like mine and shoots photos that are squarer than the 2:3 aspect ratio of photo paper, then you'll need to crop in order to avoid having white borders on two edges of the paper. (iPhoto has predefined constraints for 4x6 and many other common photo sizes.)

I've got the i850 and it absolutely rocks

Its the same for the i950
unparalleled at this price range.

My ink never seems to run out. Been printing since may 14th and it's still running on the original cartridges
