How common is this problem on LCD's? I've never seen it on my laptops or on my 15" iMac. I am thinking of an Apple LCD for my G4 but want to know how widespred the problem is or if its just a lot of bitching about a minor problem. I remember being paranoid about all sorts of problems with my iBook after reading the Apple forums but having no problems at all.

I have two dead pixels on my 17" iMac. Luckily they're right at the botom of my screen and I never notice them (except one which appears to be blue on the black background of dvd player)
They've been there since day 1 of ownership But touch wood, I haven't had any more 'appear'
I actually never knew a thing about dead pixels until I got my iMac, and the only reason I know about them is because I've got two of them

Before you decide which LCD monitor to buy, one thing you might consider doing is looking at the dead/stuck pixel policy for each of the monitors you're considering. Some are more hardcore than others.

At any rate, I don't think this is a huge problem -- like so many of these tech products, the expressions of justifiable dissatisfaction from those unlucky enough to get a lemon can make the problem appear larger than it is.

I have 3 on my TiBook 800.
1 really visible and 2 that I only notice when I look for them.

i have 1 white one on my 12" ibook 800. it is about 6cm from the left and 2cm from the top.

i have had it since day one. i thought i was going to cry when os X booted the blue screen and i saw it. but i 6 months into owning my ibook i have to think about where it is.

my wallpapers have white in that spot and i lean towards the white aqua themes.

none, CRT baby

its just something about buying a product with known acceptable flaw in it. just doesn't do it for me.

maybe in 3 years when they work out the kinks and the prices drop when everyone will be clamoring over OLIED screens

There are less and less dead pixels in TFT screens nowadays. I recently bought a Sony screen and the salesman told me that I could return it if there were ANY dead pixels in it. Needless to say, the screen is perfect. So are both my PB and the iBook.

0 dead pixels on the 20" Apple Cinema Display I bought last week.

1680 x 1050
1,764,000 pixels and not one of them are dead. Pretty spiffy if you ask me...

- Powerbook G4 1GHz c.4 or 5, but not a problem. They're dead as opposed to stuck.

- 20" Apple LCD. None whatsoever. I made certain of it before I parted with the poundage.

1 stuck on my iMac. Magenta in the lower right quadrant of the screen, been there since day one. I was disappointed at the time but now I rarely notice it, mainly only when that pixel is supposed to be black.

We have about half a dozen Apple LCDs in various sizes in my office, and five new 17-inch iMacs as well. I know of one stuck pixel on a 15-inch, and my old 22-inch Cinema Display has two, but I haven't seen any on the other displays. I have even run PiXel Check because I was expecting to find them, but nothing. Manufacturing must really be improving.

My PowerBook and 17-inch LCD at home are perfect.

I have on my Samsung 172T.
It's somewhat central, and I thought it was gonna bug the crap outta me, but it really is a non-issue.
Doesn't bother me in the least.

PB Pismo: 0
15" Studio Display (B&W): 0
20" Studio Display: 1

The dead pixel in the 20" display is barely noticable and only shows up on very light backgrounds so I don't mind it too much. This pixel is strange in that it sometimes changes color from red to black.

4 of the last 6 Apple LCDs I have bought have had dead or stuck pixels...

12" Powerbook - 1 stuck blue
15" Powerbook - 2 dead, 1 blue
17" Studio Display - 1 Dead
12" iBook - 2 dead, 1 stuck red

The two uneffected are the earliest. A 466SE iBook, and a G3 233 'Wallstreet' Powerbook.

Despite other comments, I was going to comment that I thought manufacturing was getting worse!

Maybe I just got a few other peoples bad pixels along the way

I have one white pixel on my iBook 800. I was really nummed when I first started the computer and saw it there......but now I dont care anymore. I am used to it and it gives my favourite gadget a little character. I also have a 15" Flat screen iMac with no dead pixels.

After looking REAAAAAAAALY hard on my 20" Cinema, I found 3 stuck pixels. I can't even see them unless I look for them on purpose, and only on very light or dark backgrounds.

No bad pixels on my PowerBook, and none on my last two iBooks.

I have 2 20" apple lcds. one of them has a stuck red pixel in the lower left corner.

The way these things are made, you have to accept 1,2,3 dead pixels other wise we would be paying $5000 for a 20" lcd...

When I started using my 17-inch PowerBook, it seemed to have two dead pixels on it: one white one stuck about two centimeters right and one centimeter down from the upper-left corner, and one black one stuck about two or three centimeters left of the center.

However, after some light massaging with RadTech PowerSleevz, the problem with the one in the center disappeared.

The problem with the other one didn't go away immediately, but it gradually did after repeated gentle massaging. Every now and then, it has returned, but it hasn't done so for the past two weeks or so.

I have one on my new 20" display. I thought it would bother me a lot, but I can't find it unless I really look hard. Not a problem whatsoever.

Actually I just found one that's black in the upper right hand portion of 20" Cinema. Nothing more though. If I use a non solid color desktop BG I don't even see it.

My Dads Cornea had one, it had a problem (unrelated to that) that they replaced under warranty and the new panel has no dead pixels.

I believe I had one on my old Viewsonic CRT (I've heard that dead pixels can't happen on a CRT but mine sure looked like one). It was just a dead spot, about the same size as a pixel that wouldn't display anything, it wasn't a bright color or anything, just black. Dragging stuff over it wouldn't show anything. I had to send that one in for service and when I got it back, the dead pixel was gone.

My 15" Studio Display has one dead pixel -- it just seems to be off, with no particular color. It's usually hard to see so you don't notice it unelss you look from the right angle.

I also have an old PowerBook 5300c. This one has no dead pixels. Looks as perfect as the day it came out of the factory.
