It's become clear to me that I need a scanner. I don't have much money to work with, but I'd like to get something that will work reasonably well for Photoshop and faxing.

Here are my requirements:

1. USB or (preferably) FireWire connection
2. compatible with Mac OS 9 and Windows XP
3. not from Umax

Any suggestions?

I have a CanoScan LiDE 30 and it's great. Works fine with Photoshop 7 in Mac OS X (10.2.6) and it's ultra small, just for US$ 79.99

I'll second that. Defintely not a speed demon but certainly useable for occasional scanning.

i bought the hp scanjet 5370c thirteen short months ago and can no longer use it because hp has not put out drivers for jaguar. their tech folk say they're working on a solution. meanwhile i sit with a scanner i cannot use. pisses me off, really. the only time i've had a worse experience was when i bought a umax that stopped working ten days out of the box. fortunately the reseller took it back without a hassle. umax wanted me to send my brand new scanner to them on my dime to be fixed.

i just post this so you know about other experiences with scanner manufacturers.

got mine for $50 at Circuit City awhile back. USB powered and everything. Picture quality is pretty good on it as well, and its so small i can throw it in my laptop bag and bring it to work w/o a problem!
