Has anyone had any luck getting this IR adapter working with Mac OS 9 or X?

I'd like to work like an old bar-code reader I had did. I'd like to be able to use it to enter an alphanumeric code into an Excel sheet.

Is this a pipe dream?
I'm cookoo for Cocoa Apps!
