Does anyone know if recent macs support 5.1 Surround sound? I remember reading that the DVD player in 10.2 didn't, but I'd like to get some surround sound going on here. I've installed panther with the new DVD player, but I don't now if my hardware/software supports it.
OS: 10.3 DP1
Hardware: 17" imac 800 Mhz
Cheap, yet nice speakers:
logitech 5.1

your built-in hardware doesn't support it. the new powermac G5 does natively.
your hardware can support it with the addition of a pci card (like the m-audio revolution, around $100) or a usb device (m-audio makes one too).
as for software (like the dvd player) - i'm not sure.

VLC has a special 5.1 version for X (or at least they used to, dunno if its still being updated)

According to the latest MacAddict (sorry, no link as it's the latest issue and they haven't posted the article yet), as of OS X 10.1.5 the Apple DVD Player passed the Dolby 5.1 and DTS signals through and you could get surround sound out a DVD if you had the appropriate card. I have no personal experience with this, I'm just relaying what I read.
It's the July issue if you want to check it out. I beleive it was in the 'Ask Us' section.

Nope, DVD player does not pass the bitstreams. Go search Apple's discussion boards or here; there's been plenty of bitching about it. The OS is capable of doing it, VLC proves that, but VLC is a hack job that's lucky to work for 5 minutes without crashing on my Cube. Here's hoping for DVD Player pass-through in Panther...
