Hi

I just picked up a LiDE 30 safe in the knowledge that native OS X drivers were available.

I downloaded the 'Canoscan' and 'toolbox' drivers, but no luck. I'm a relative novice and don't fully understand how things should work. I'm content to scan in PSE 2, but this won't work - when trying to import using the driver, the scanner grinds and I get an alert telling me to unlock the scanner, disconnect and reconnect the USB lead. I tried some piece of Canon capture software (from one of my many downloads) but this can't find the right driver.

Searching on this forum, I discovered all of the horrible Console log issues (related to button drivers for LiDE 20) and weeded these out. These sort of things freak me out and, eventually, I cleared everything Canon-related and tried again - downloading drivers, loading drivers from CD (PSE 2 plug-in?), etc.

It would be nice if this scanner worked as stated, but simple interaction with PSE 2 and no buttons would be fine.

Can anyone offer advice?

I have to admit, I'm finding it a struggle being a Mac/OS X user. From shitty Epson printers to shitty USB ADSL modems, I've had no luck with peripherals. Sometimes, the Windows herd seems inviting...

i dont have Canon, but Epson scanner, but i know that buttons do not work in OS X and same is for Canon as well i think.

Just scan from an application, Photoshop or Photoshop Elements, using TWAIN drivers and not pushing buttons. Also, Image Capture should work too.

It sounds like you have the software installed fine but you need to unlock the scanner heads which come locked for shipping. If you turn it over there is a switch near the front of the scanner that slides between a locked and unlocked padlock.

Sorry if you have already tried this but that's what it sounds like when the scanner makes a grinding noise.

I agree about the general state of driver software for OS X. A lot of this is caused by the fact that it is a new system with a pretty different way of writing software than the old MacOS or Windows, so a lot of the vendors haven't quite figured out how to best write software yet. I have seen this start to get better in the last few months though. The other problem is that the impression from the vendors is that OS X users are such a small part of their market that they don't want to spend a lot of effort to make their hardware work.

BTW, Canon's drivers are generally pretty good. Their install routine for the scanner is crap, but it is because they made the process 100% the same as their Windows driver. That said, I usually just install the driver and leave off that toolbox stuff as I don't like it popping up if I accidently bump the scanner or something.

Thanks for the replies so far.

The unlock switch is well and truly unlocked. Am I looking at dodgy hardware?

And is this helpful?

Looking for devices matching vendor ID=1193 and product ID=8718
found my device (vendor = 1193, product = 8718)
Interface found.
Interface class 255, subclass 0
Interface has 3 endpoints.

Thanks - hope I don't just have to take this thing back.

WAIT!

Just had another go at the unlock switch - it's pretty stiff and leads you to believe it's unlocked when it isn't. All is well now and I've just produced a very tasty scan.

I find computing a constant zig-zag between misery and joy. Rather like relationships.

Many thanks.

Glad that helped. The LiDE 30 is actually a pretty dang nice scanner, especially for the price. I really like mine.

"I find computing a constant zig-zag between misery and joy."

That is absolutely brilliant. You, sir, are a poet!
