"While iChat AV works best with iSight, you can use any FireWire DV camera or Web cam for video chat."

my canon doesn't seem to work.....under the ichat video preferences, it says "no camera is attached to your computer," even though my canon zr-20 is attached and on. (imovie sees it just fine, and allows me to do the "live" shots that ichat should do).
how do i let ichat know the camera is there?
thanks

What mac do you have? If it happens to be a G3, then there is an unfortunate bug which means a DV cam wont work on a G3. But will be fine on any G4 or G5 etc. Hopefully Apple will fix that soon. But not until they have sold a few more iSights of course..

I have an iSight but before I got it I used my Sony DV cam and it worked right after plugging in the firewire cable.
Make sure nothing else that uses the camera (like iMovie) is running while trying to use iChatAV. It should auto-recognize the camcorder. Also take the tape out of the camera so it doesn't go to sleep and cause iChat to lose the signal. Other than that try a restart or unplugging and re-plugging the firewire cable but it should automatically just see the camera.

Check out this page http://www.ecamm.com/mac/ichatusbcam/
They have a driver for USB webcams and they take the G3 limiter off so-to-speak and they claim they are working on enabling firewire on slower G3's too. Keep ann eye open for an update. Hope this helps.

I don't have a G3 so I couldn't confirm if that's your only issue, but I do have a Canon ZR-20. Make sure you turn it on in record (as opposed to playback) 'mode'. You know, push the green turn-the-camera-on-thingy up instead of down.
