does the new (15GB, 30GB) iPod allow charging/transfer without the use of the dock?

First off, WELCOME to the MacNN forums!

And to answer your question, YES! The new iPods have the connector slot right on the bottom of themselves; you can plug the charging/transferring cable directly into the iPod w/o using the dock.

proprietary connector on the end for the iPod (or dock) and firewire for the computer on the other. Firewire end also plugs into the wall charger.

Nope. It is better for Apple but worse for us.

Just a quick note about the proprietary connector. The reason it is proprietary is that it allows for audio out in addition to the file transfer and charging. I'm sure that this is not possible over solely a FW connector.

well, it would, but it would require the Dock to do some digital to analog conversion that the iPod does already, adding to costs and maybe making the Dock actually worth $40
