When I plug in the phone to my PowerBook, it is recognized under Network Connections. I enter the phone number I have to dial to connect under the PPP settings, but I can't connect. It tells me there is "A modem error occurred" and to try again. Do I need to select a special modem? I am using a Sanyo phone, but I am actually doing research for a friend, who will have a Samsung phone. I don't imagine it being any different, but please advise. Thanks for any help.

Tell me what cable you have, what phone model you have, what service you're using.
and yes, you'll need to use a special modem script. Surely you won't be using 'Apple internal 56k modem' or whatever.
I connect every time on my Sprint Vision Sanyo 8100 phone with USB data cable.

A true USB cable with no converter halfway thru the cable is the best bet.. hopefully that's what you have.
I use the 'Sprint PCS Vision' modem script in the pull down menu in 10.2.6.
dial *777 not just 777 (if you're using sprint which I'm sure you are)
this should work.
go to... http://www.macsprintusers.com/ and it should help if you still can't connect.
good luck

My friend bought the FutureDial cable and it has two USB connections actually. The red one is for using it as a modem and the green one is for connecting it for some syncing thing, which I believe is PC only. Other people are able to have this phone recognized from what I've read, but I can't figure it out for the life of me. Does anyone have any suggestions?
To recap, it's a Samsung a500 on a PowerBook.

Can a mortorola phone be used as a modem as well for the powerbook. Does it cost extra to go on line with it? If you have free night and weekends what is the situation for that.

That depends how you're going to connect.
If you're using dial-up (CSD) -- which is slower and takes longer to connect -- only minute useage will apply (so yes, it would be unlimited during nights & weekends). AT&T blocks CSD but other companies allow it.
If you're using high-speed access (GPRS "t-zones", "mMode" or 3G Sprint Vision) you have to subscribe to an internet rate plan. Data charges apply, minute useage does not.
