iSight Preferences?

OK, so I got this iSight and got one for my dad.

Every once in a while, the video gets choppy and the audio cuts out totally.

I think this is due to the bandwidth limit.

Anybody know the best way to configure the bandwidth limit option under the iChat Preferences?

My setup is a cable modem with a 1 Ghz Powerbook.

My dad's setup is a DSL modem with a 700 Mhz eMac.

I am thinking that mine should be set to 500 kbps and his should be set to 200 kbps. I have seen the chart on Apple's page about the different machines but if my cable modem is capable of 1 mbps and his DSL is capable of 500 kbps, then why not use those settings?

Is this right?

What do you guys think? Are there any other ways to optimize iChat when using iSight?

Thanks!

Trial and error is the best way to find that one out.

Note that your upstream probably won't be the same as your downstream, and with cable your bandwidth isn't guaranteed at all.

Try an online speed test to verify your respective upload speeds, then set the prefs to the next lower value. For cable, I found 200kbps works best, but it will vary for every person.

Here's one and here's another. There are many of these and I'm not sure how accurate they are. Try a couple and find an average.
