I got a LGE 4020B DVD burner (2x DVD-R, 1x DVD-RW) in the Pyro firewire enclosure. The setup works fine with Windows (via Nero) and Linux (dvdrecord). I am having very little luck with OS X though. It seems that almost every single piece of software (even non-Apple software) is made only for internal Apple drive. One of prog that will handle the external drives is the Roxio Toast Titanuim 5.2.1 but all I'm getting with it are coasters (buffer underflows, blah, blah). I still haven't found a prog that will erase the DVD-RW (Toast won't do it). What are other people doing with external burners? What software are you using?

Thanks.

I use a LaCie FW DVD-R/RW (Pioneer 105) burner with Toast 5.2.1 on my G4 867 mhz without any problems whatsoever.
May I ask a stupid question? Is your drive a +R/RW or -R/RW? The reason I asked is that I tried to use a Ricoh +R/RW drive on my mac, and even though Toast recognized and burned a disc, the disc was useless. Apple does not support (yet) the +R/RW format.
Your problem could also be media related. What brand media are you using with the drive?
2007 iMac 24" 2.4 Core2Duo (currently 1Gig Ram), 4 FW400 hd's, 1 FW 800 HD, Brother MFC420N,, Liteon DVD-RW, Epson R320.

Thanks for replying. I thought I was the only one using a non-Apple drive for a while. The same media (Memorex) works fine on Windows/Linux. And it is just a plain DVD-R(W) drive. No + business at all.

Formac's latest version of their Devideon encases the newest Pioneer DVR-06 which does both -R/-RW and +R/+RW so I would assume that their proprietary software works with all formats as well, though they've issued no revision of it.

The DVR-06 has just been listed on their website, rather quietly, as I've not seen a single press release as usual with Formac.

My noname enclosure with Panasonic LF-321 works fine with everything (except iDVD). My noname enclosure with Panasonic LF-521 won't work with the iApps (presumably because support hasn't been included yet), but it works fine in Toast.

Have you tried a Pioneer DVD-RW and Apple DVD-Rs?

Well the Pioneer drives are the apple drives, so no wonder theya re working so well. The Panasonic i know is supported by Toast, it's a pretty popular drive after the Pioneers. I didn't even know LG made a dvd burner, if it isn't that popular, Toast might not officially suport it, have you checked on their site to see if it is supported?

LG drives are also Apple SuperDrives (iMac). Indeed, one may argue that there should be more of a chance that the LG 4020B is supported than a Panasonic, since Apple does not use Panasonic SuperDrives in any current Mac desktops. (That said, the older Panasonics are fully supported. Last I checked the latest Panasonic isn't, except in Toast.) Apple uses Sony SuperDrives in some Macs, too.

The non-Apple version of the GMA-4020B also supports DVD-RAM, BTW.
