Your choices are Canon or Epson. The new ones of either are great. I'm an Epson owner and have had great sucess with mine, but the new Canons look very sweet and have been getting favorable reviews.

Give serious consideration to the HP 5650. I own this printer and find that it prints photo's that are very acceptable and it will certainly provide you with the every day needs as well. You can even purchase a secound paper tray.

i think you will get an overwhelming number of recommendations for the Canon i850/i950 printers. there have been several topics on them recently where people have had nothing but good things to say about them. search in this forum for topics on printers, i think almost all of them have a recommendation for one of these printers.

For $150, the Canon i850 is the perfect model... its photos are only slightly lower quality than the i950's, and in non-photo printouts, it's significantly faster.
I have an i850 and love it. The only possible downside is that I have found that it really doesn't like non-Canon photo paper -- both Kodak and Burlington papers I tried both resulted in nasty pooling up of the ink. Canon's paper is absolutely, positively gorgeous.

Actually, none of the "photo" printers from Epson, Canon or HP will print on non-manufacturer's paper. General purpose ink jet printers can however - but I don't know why you would want to use it unless you want your pictures to fade in a few years. You're right about Canon's paper. It is the best of the bunch.
