The very popular Logitech MX500/700 offer 3 extra mouse buttons (back, forward, and quick switch) which are all programmable.
Many of the Microsoft mice have back and forward buttons that are also programmable.

Sooooo, ...

How do you use those extra buttons?
How often do you really use them?
In which applications do you use them most?
If you had one more button or one more scroll wheel, what would you use it for?

I use those extra buttons in your browser.
I always use them when browsing.
I use them in Safari for the most part.
Since my Logitech MX700 has so many buttons I don't think there is really a need for another one.

I just got my MX500 yesterday, so I haven't had a chance to play with it too much. I already set up the Finder and Safari. I'm still getting used to the extra buttons. But I love it so far!

My Kensington TurboBall has 4 buttons:
Top left= click
Top right= right click
bottom left= command click (to open links in tabs in Safari)
bottom right: nothing (I hit it accidentally a lot)
I keep things simple, otherwise I just wouldn't remember to use the extra functions or anything (especially if I had different button configs for different apps).

I assigned the key command CMD + ` to one of the buttons so that I can easily switch windows within the same app. I assigned it to the down auto scroll button and made the up auto scroll button the down auto scroll since I rarely ever have a need to scroll up.

I suppose when I have Panther I will assign at least one button to perform Expose functions instead.

Someone I know assigned Return to one of their mouse buttons. I tried it for a while, but I found myself missing the original function (forward) more.

I have the MX700 and have the side buttons for Command [ and ] for forward/back in a browser and the Finder.

Button about scroll wheel - Hide app

Scroll wheel button - close window

Button below wheel - enter

The button below that one - hide/show dock.

Honestly the only ones I use a lot are the forward/back, hide app and close window. When Expose is here I'll for sure reassign some buttons.

Oh yea, and all kinds of things for Urban Terror and Quake.

Kensington Thinking Mouse. Four buttons. I'd feel naked without at least two buttons.

Upper right = single click
Lower right = double click
Upper left = menu
Lower left = command+W (close window)

The upper and lower pairs are also programmable, but at this time I don't use the pairs.

Note that I have it set up for left-handed use.

Oooo, hadn't thought of that (others suggested that, too).
Based on this thread, I think I'm going to try:

left = click
right = menu ctrl-click
wheel up = scroll up
wheel dn = scroll down
wheel click = enter
button above wheel = Cmd-` (next window)
button below wheel = Cmd-~ (prev window)
bottom button below wheel = Cmd-H in Jaguar; Expose' in Panther
thumb buttons = app-specific (in Safari, fwd and back)

Other suggestions still welcome, though!!

sorry not meaning to hijack

anyone know where i can resolve this?

on a webside that was wider than the window, when one pushed middle click (scroll button), a circle would pop up on screen with two arrows (for mouse icon) and one could drag mouse left and right, and causing screen to scroll left or right.

how do i set it so when i am in safari and i run up on a wide page, how would i get in or view? ...

Kensington TurboMouse:
Top left= browser back
Bottom left=click
bottom right=command click
Chord the 2 bottom buttons= close window.

I set some of the 5 quicklaunch buttons to be Expose commands, but never ended up using them.

I really wish the MS mice had the ability to chord. It's so handy.
