Can I use the old USB to serial cables and is there a software suite that I can buy to do this? Is it already built in with HP drivers? Any suggestions?

I use an AsanteTalk for my HP 6MP. I've used this for years now and it just great. You can use it directly into a single computer or shared across a LAN, no problem. You can usually find 'em pretty cheap on eBay.

Do you need additional drivers for this? Can you see the printer in Print center? Does it look like a shared printer to Mac OS X?

You shouldn't be needing any additional drivers for 6P. I have a 6L and there were no built in drivers for it, but that's why gimp is there to solve a problem

No.
Yes.
No.
It does not look like a shared printer; it looks just like a local printer, which is infinitely better. And it connects through AppleTalk, so it's very easy to set up. The only problem is that most routers do not bridge AppleTalk from wired to wireless, so if you want to print wirelessly, you'll have some additional config steps.

Can you run the asante Talk adapter into an ethernet hub or does it have to be connected directly to the mac?

Another option. I have a PC with a parallel port. I hooked my 6MP up to it, and I print to it from my Mac using CUPS (the print system built into OSX).

I have a HP 5MP connected to an asantetalk which plugs into my ethernet netgear router. I can see the printer in print center, I can print like it was a local printer, I also have a wireless access point plugged into my netgear router, and I can print to the HP from my TiBook - wirelessly. All works great. PM me if you need further help-

Once it is networked through the AsanteTalk, it is an independent network device. I have mine connected to a switch, which is then connected to a wireless router. I can print to it from any wired or wireless client.
