I'm looking to upgrade my old stock internal DVD-RAM drive to a DVD-RW/DVD+RW drive. I'd like to be able to not only burn data DVDs for backup and archiving, but also use appd like iDVD for DVD authoring. I remember reading that only Apple SuperDrives are compatible with the iApps. Is this true? And if not, what are the other drives that are compatible?

I've got my eye on these two drives. Can anyone tell me if either one is compatible?

The Pioneer is not. The Sony is but the RW is not implemented. Go to xlr8yourmac.com and check out their database. I believe there is a workaround for the Pioneer. Both drives do work with Toast Titanium.

Cool, thanks for the info. I usually check xlr8yourmac.com first, but for some reason it completely slipped my mind.

It looks like the Sony is a nice drive. I'm not too concerned with the lack of RW support noted. I never use the RW capabilities of my current external CDR, and don't see myself needing it.

Has anyone had personal experience with the Sony DW-U10A drive? The reports on xlr8yourmac seems pretty good.

I have installed the pioneer 106 and it is fully supported by my G4. I can even burn DVD+RW's in Toast. All you have to do is change a value in a file.

If I'm not mistaken Apple is installing the Sony drive in newer computers. So it should be good to go. If I were in the market for a dvd burner I think I'd go with the Sony. I've had a couple of their cd burners and they were real work horses.
