i see where they are listed as mac and pc formatted.

can a "pc" formatted zip disk be reformatted to work in a mac?
if so what is the procedure?

You can use a PC formatted zip disk without reformatting, because OS X can read FAT/FAT32 filesystems. However, you may wish to reformat it as an HFS+ volume, which can be done with Disk Utility in Applications -> Utilities.
