I bought a SyncMaster 172w, and I want to connect it to a Powermac G4 (733MhZ) via VGA.

I chose all the available options from the display preference panel, but I can NOT find a resolution that fits the 16:9 aspect ratio of the monitor (to be precise, it's a 15:9). As a consequence, I can NOT see my desktop in real WIDESCREEN format (unless I stretch a 4:3 image through the monitor's "full screen" option - which is not what I want).

I had the same problem with my 12" powerrbook, and I found out that the 12" powerbook doesn's support such resolution.

My Powermac has a VGA and a ADC output (therefore I deduct that it would connect to an Apple cinema display, which is widescreen!)

So, what does the widescreen format depend on:
- the DVI connection?
- the computer's video card?

Which card do I have to buy for my Powermac G4 to take advantage of the widescreen aspect ratio of the SyncMaster 172w?
