I am about to buy a new digital camera to complement my Nikon Coolpix 775. I have all but settled on a Powershot S50.
My requirements are a easy to use 'point and click' style so my family can use it, but with decent MP and some more 'advanced' features so I can experiment when I want to.
The S50 comes in at £385 on Amazon UK, over £100 cheaper than a G3 and £200 than G5, and only £35 more then the S45... Figured it was a good deal.
Anyone have any experience with the S50 or any advice on the purchase? Any comments would be greatly appreciated...
Cheers,
Marc

I went for the S45 over the S50 a few months ago. The S45 was $150 cheaper at the time. I also didn't need the extra pixels. The S45 is a terrific camera, very easy to use and the LCD screen is very clear and doesn't seem to scratch like the one on my Olympus 2040. It is a little hefty, and feels substantial, which I prefer over the Nikons. I am sure the S50 can only be better. Highly recommended.

i've had the S30 for quite a while, and it's great. it uses the same OS as the G2/G3 cameras, but without all of the physical bells and whistles (interchangeable lenses, flip-out LCD, etc.). it's perfect for what i do with it (regular point-and-shoot, with some manual tweaking)

I have the Canon S50 and really like it. You can find some pics I took at http://homepage.mac.com/jhromadka. The Automatic mode performs really well so your family can use it ok, and you have plenty of additional settings should you want to use it. It also takes good underwater photos as well.
One of my friends from Europe is a real photo afficianado. He has one of those really big and expensive SLR Canon digital cameras, and still picked up an S50 after he saw how well it performed so he could have a smaller camera for day-to-day use.
Let me know if you have any specific questions.

I got the S40 from Amazon UK about 12 months ago, and it was more expensive than that S50 is now. The S40 is a fantastic camera so I would say the S50 would be better performance & value - can't go wrong.
If you haven't already, make sure you check out dpreview.com's S50 review

Thanks for the input everyone! It sounds like just what I am after... and there have been no disaster stories posted either which is always good!
I'm going to order this afternoon!
