Hey all, I'm gonna attempt to get a g5 but in doing so I won't have much left for a monitor. So I'm trying to find something nice in the $150-200 range. I'd like flat screen and possibly super bright (or whatever the brand wants to call it) Obviously a 17" would be easier to find than a 19" but suggestions for both are welcome, even if they go a little over.

Also, what are your experiences with super bright, especially as it applies to video editing and similar tasks.

thanx,
XSwift

I am sorry to be off-topic but I think more money should be spend to the analog human-interacted devices.

The fact is you will be using your KB/mouse, speaker/headphones, and monitor (CRT/LCD) every single time you interact with your computer and any inferior parts become very noticable very quickly and deteriorates your computing experience. Whereas, you will hardly notice the difference between, say a dual 1.25 and a 1.6G5 most of the time when you are web-surfing, writing e-mails, etc.

For that same logic, this is why audio magazines recommend you spending most of the most on speakers rather than the best amplifier.

For what monitors to get, I'd suggest a good 17" over a cheap 19". Check http://www.techbargains.com/ for deals.

Samsung and Philips are the brands that I have had very good experince with with budget 17" CRTs. Try running it at 1280x1024 at a flicker free rate and look at the sharpness of text. If you get a second hand Apple monitor the range from terrific (the B&W monitor nice up to 1600x1200) to horrible (budget 17" called 1705 blurry at 1024x768 and higher)

I completely understand and agree with the idea that a monitor is one of, if not the, most important single component in a computer. But I also realize a $200 monitor is easier to replace than a $2000 G4.

This time next year I can add a much nicer monitor, and I'll most likely keep the budget one if I have room. But in the meantime I need a system for school and feel I should get the absolute best I can afford, even if it's at the expense of peripherals.

Cheap, cheap, but good: Samsung SyncMaster 900NF (19") or 700NF (17"). Good reviews, flat screen, good sharpness, good color, full geometry controls.

Mitsubishi displays are superb, and not wildly expensive.

That said, I'd go bug your mom for a $300 loan so you can spend $500 and get a 17 or 18" LCD that won't need replacing.

Well I just placed an order for a dual2 and a 17" apple display! It's a wonderful feeling when your folks see things your way
