Well not exactly. I have a 30GB iPod, about eight weeks old. The trouble is that on the left hand side as you look at the screen, the white casing is separating from the metal back with the result that the back is starting to bulge out a little where the saparation occured.
What should I do? It has not been dropped or mistreated (hell I get mad when a fine scratch appears!!).
Any suggestions? Is this a return to Apple thing?

If ever there was one. Yes. Send it back.

Also, I'm not sure what the rules are like in Eire, but you might even be able to just return to your retailer and swap it out on the spot.

There have been several that have had this problem on the various ipod forums now. Most people are speculating that if you leave the battery charging too long (i.e. overnight) that it is swellling and causing the problem. The funny thing is alot of them have shipped it back and apple couldn't find anything. After two people I kmow I read about flew with theirs like this and it was fine when they got back on the ground it is now speculated that the pressurized cabin is somehow helping the battery swell go away and the case goes back together.

I honestly would say send it back. I do feel the battery swelling is a legitimate idea.

try holding it at top & bottom (ONLY) of the front side, while pushing hard on the apple logo in the back. Mine had the same problem, and I fixed it this way. applying pressure in this method is how you begin to take it apart (thanks MacAddict for instructions). Mine's a 30Gb bought May '03. I highly doubt the battery is "swelling" and causing this problem. cheers,
