I'm looking for a good set of speakers to connect to my iBook and later to a new PowerMac (either G4 or G5). What are the audio capabilities of each machine? Should I look at 2.1 systems, 4.1, 5.1, 6.1?

I listened to a set of Creative iTrigue 2.1 speakers at the store the other day and really liked the sound and look.

Specific recommendations would be great. I'm looking for good general sound for system feedback, MP3s, and the occasional DVD. Sub $150 range - around $100 or below would be best. I'll probably want something that includes a subwoofer.

Thanks!

-blake.

The iBook can only natively support 2/2.1 systems. You'd need a USB audio adapter ($$$) to attach anything else.

I just got a set of Klipsch speakers. It's only a 2.1 setup, but I don't really have the space or resources to go surround. They have really great sound considering their size and price point. You can really crank them up without distortion, and the sub is very precise, even at low levels.

Anything by Cambridge SoundWorks is a good value for the money.

I have their SoundWorks system. Best sounding $70 speaker/sub setup I've ever listened too.
