About a year ago, I bought a LEXAR USB MemoryStick Reader (RW012 Rev.A) so that I could transfer images from my SONY Camcorder's MemoryStick. I forget what OS I was running at the time... 10.2.0...? 10.2.1...? I dunno... but bottom line: I tried plugging the reader into EVERY USB port... on every hub... even tried plugging it DIRECTLY to the back of my G4... NO DICE!

I tried plugging it in WITH a stick in it... WITHOUT a stick in it... I tried REBOOTING with the reader plugged-in without a stick AND with a stick in it... NOTHING!!!!

I cannot get the MemStk to show-up in ANY version of OSX all the way up to the current 10.2.6. The MemStk is fine, because I can keep using it IN the camcorder... Could it just be a "dud" reader...? Or am I just missing something so BLATANTLY obvious...?

When I plug in the reader... the LED lights-up and remains lit. I can insert & remove the memory all-day and the LED doesn't so-much as flicker. Do I just bite-the-bullet and get a new one...

OH YEAH! One more thing... the reader itself is listed in the USB chain when I go into System Profiler... but if I go to the finder or Disk Utility... there is no volume to browse.

* sigh *

Any help is appreciated.

Thanx.

There are two versions of the Lexar Memory Stick reader: A and B.

The B version is built as a 'USB Mass Storage Device", and will mount without any drivers in OS X.

The A version requires a special driver to work. A driver was written for OS 9, but never for OS X, despite over 18 months of promises

Yours is a revision 'A', your only recourses are
(1) use it in Classic (if you have Classic), with an OS 9 file manager like File Buddy.
(2) Get what you can for it on eBay and try again.
(3) Call up Lexar and b!tch at them until they trade your A for B. Good luck with this approach.

Does the Camcorder have a USB port in addition to the Firewire port?

Yes it does... why...? Should I try THAT...?

EDIT: Just looked at it... it's not a "Standard" USB port and I don't think I was supplied a cable with the camera. I will check around. It's a SONY. Hopefully I can come-up with something.

HOLY CRAP!

I found the cable (in some ubiquitous cable box) plugged it in a BANG! There it was on my desktop!

That absolutely ROCKS! Thank you SO MUCH for pointing that out to me.

WoooHOOO!

on top of this, perhaps the company lexar gets it's readers from is pretty bad. I had a ads firewire cf reader and lexar had the same one. All in all, it was horrible. I found through some research that addonics was the way to go!

BTW, with the ADS firewire reader, I would rarely see my CF card on my desktop. Now with this addonics, I can do CF and MS (and about 6 others I don't use though) all over firewire!
