I am about to purchase a Palm device and really like the Sony Clie line. Does the Palm Conduit that Apple offers work with the Sony handhelds or do I need the "missing sync" from markspace?
Also has anyone sync'ed with Palm OS 5 and OS X.2? Did you use iSync or some other app?
Any experiences/recommendations/instructions are welcome as I have not yet used a Palm device with my Mac. Thanks for the help!!!

You cannot sync your Palm with only iSync. You still use Palm Desktop for syncing. iSync, however, can work with Palm desktop and move the data onto your cell phone/.Mac account etc. iSync cannot actually talk to your palm.
With that out of the way your Sony should sync fine with Palm Desktop. The Missing Sync will provide some functions such as transfering video, etc, that Palm Desktop cannot do alone with a Clie.

I use iCal and Address Book for all my PIM functions. I guess my question now becomes can I still use these apps or am I forced to use the Palm Desktop with the palm? I really like iCal and would hate to have to switch.

You still use iCal and Address Book. You just have to have Palm Desktop installed to control the Palm syncing (and to sync Memo Pad, install apps on the Palm, etc). You never have to even open Palm Desktop if you don't want, but it must be present to use iSync/iCal/Address Book.

Also, don't forget to download and install the Palm add-on for iSync. It is very hard to find at the apple.com/isync website. Might want to look for it at Version Tracker. Version 1.1 of iSync still uses the palm add-on. Don't know why they didn't do a better job of linking to it from the front page.

It's not too hard.
1) Go to www.apple.com/isync
2) Click the download link
3) At the bottom of that page, by the System Requirements, is the info and link for the Palm Conduit.

It is poorly placed. It should be much more prominent on the iSync page and there should be instructions on the iSync page (not the download page) that clearly state that the palm conduits must be downloaded separately. Better yet, it should be included in the download of iSync and have the option to install it when iSync is installed.
There should also be a large button at the top of the page adjacent the "download iSync" button that makes it easier to find.
To me, this fits into the old attitude at Apple. "If it wasn't invented here....."

I am considering a Palm or a Clie as well. Just to be positive, can I sync iCal and AddressBook with the Clie or do I need the $30-40 Markspace program? What exactly do you need the Markspace for/not. This would be helpful info, because if you needed the program, the Clie is automatically $30-40 more expensive than the sticker price, same with PocketPC!
