How is the Zaurus' compatibility with Macs? Compared to that of Pocket PC (little) and Palm (a lot)?

Overall, would a Zaurus be a good little sidekick to a PowerBook?

Get a Palm. Support is the best.

The Zaurus looks like a very nice unit. The fact that they run Linux on it also appeals to me. However I have never heard of anyone using one with a Mac on the forums so it might not be the best choice, compatibility wise.

Just to add a question about this. Has anyone used the PocketMac software for their Pocket PC on the mac? I have a iPaq that has been an excellent tool to have and want to keep using it without having the major need to run a windows emulator. I would still do that for installing software and such but other than that I want to link into Entourage and address book for my contacts and email.

BTW, not trying to hijack thread but figured this ouwl help the original poster with some extra info that I could also use.

Depends which Zaurus. The 5500 and 5600 are HUGE. I mean, massive. They tower over even the big iPaqs.

Plus... Mac compatability is awful. I'd say go for a Palm.

PocketMac is a rip-off. Don't use it.

Missing Sync for PPC is OK. It's a little buggy. The big problem is, most Pocket PC applications are packaged inside Windows .EXE installers. So get ready to boot up VPC to install any new files...

FWIW I found these sites related to Zaurus and OS X. The connection/syncronisation abilities appear to be still quite experimental but present.

http://www.lucid-cake.net/osx_zaurus_usb/index_en.html
http://zxsync.sourceforge.net/html/index.html
http://www.hgsc.bcm.tmc.edu/~kdurbin/maczaurus.html

The Palm by far seems like the safe bet.

I'll look for Missing sync and try it out. I was wondering about PocketMac. The website is more like a big sales pitch then any useable informatiom. I did email them about a couple of questions last week and all i got for a reply was bunch of double talk, very annoying. I have also read three reviews wqhere they refused to send software for review.

As for using VPC to install anyh apps. I kind of figured that would be the case and since I already have most of what I need on it, with the exception of what may be usefull down the road, that would be fine by me. I am not a heavy user of VPC anyway but mainly just for whatever I need that's work related that i cannott yet run in OSX.

Thanks for the info on Missing Sync, though. I'll go and try it out.

I think pocketmac has a support forum, if you go to that you will see a lot of angry customers. Also brighthand.com and pocketpcpassion.com have had discussions on pocketmac. At $80 dollars its a ripoff for what it provides. Now that the missingsync is released they have some serious competition and I wouldn't be surprised if they lower the price.

I have a iPaq1910, I love it has lots of great things, but I think when the TT3 comes out (supposedly sept/oct time frame) I may jump ship and go back.

Mike
