Here's the theory.
Ok, Microsoft have today announced new wireless keyboard and mouse. The new mouse has a "tilt" function, to allow horizontal scrolling.
Apple have a patent on a new mouse device which will allow horizontal scrolling. Don't have a link - saw the patent somewhere on macnn.
Anyway, my theory is that MS know Apple are about to release the new mouse and keyboard. They have insiders at Apple I'm sure. As they want to beat Apple to the announcement, they announced their stuff today - taking the wind out of Apple in Paris.
Apple will release their new mouse and keyboard at the Paris expo. But the press won't show much interest, as it is just a "copy" of Microsoft. And afterall, MS invented the mouse.
"Two decades ago we designed the mouse simply as a utilitarian device to help users navigate Microsoft Word," said Matt Barlow, worldwide director of marketing and business development for Microsoft Hardware.

I assume you are kidding when you say that MS invented the mouse; because they didn't I'm quite sure. I think is was the Xerox development team that came up with it....

Yes it was a joke, based on the comment that the MS guy actually said (see my first post).
The inventor was Douglas Engelbart by the way in 1968 I believe.

Microsoft are releasing their products (mouse and keyboard) on the 16th of sept the same day as the expo. If you go to their site you will see.
http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/mouse/
Seems a bit weird they choose the same day as the apple expo.

It's not weird at all. It's competition. There's nothing illegal or immoral with releasing a competing product on the same day as your competitor. I'm almost positive Apple has done the same thing.

I really like the looks of the new microsoft mouse as can be seen at the link posted above. Not sure how much you would really need to scroll left-to-right though, maybe if you were using a spreadsheet.I guess we'll see if Apple has anything up their sleeves in a week or so.
