Hey all,

I'm in a bind. My computer died on me (but will restart from a CD) and after several hours with AppleCare it appears I need to reformat my drives and reinstall system (and all other) software.

I need to do a backup of my hard drives before I do all this, of course. So I am hoping to find an external firewire hard drive (or USB, but I'd prefer firewire) that will mount to my iBook running the OS 9.2.1 install CD or the OS X install CD (not sure which year but I bought the iBook in November 2001).

Does anyone have a hard drive that mounts automatically with no need to install software (drivers, etc)? I think I will be able to actually format the disk with the Drive Setup utility on the install CD.

They had an Acom Data for about $189 at Compusa... not the best deal but it is there so I'm especially interested in it.

Thanks, and anxiously awaiting your replies!

Betsey

None of them need drivers as far as I know, you just have to Mac format them.

None need drivers, you can buy any drive, mac or pc it doesn't matter, when you buy a pc firewire drive your mac will ask you if you want to format the drive in HSF+, your mac can't read FAT32 of NTSF formatted drives...

Be sure to drag the drive to the trash before unplugging the drive or select the firewire drive and select eject in the file menu...

If you're not 100% sure then you shouldn't be making such statements.

Thanks for all of your replies. I went out and bought an Acom Data 120GB drive, and it works perfectly. However, copying was excruciatingly slow. So slow it seemed it had stopped. So I shut down and then restarted.

Now it won't boot off of the CDROM at all. Damn! I guess my next try is to try starting it in target disk mode and attaching it to another bootable drive or computer and trying to drag the stuff off that way. If that doesn't work, I don't know what to do.

I can't believe my laptop was working fine 48 hours ago.

Back up. Back up. Back up. Don't be like me. Back up.
