Hmmm, my girlfriend just got her 30 GB stolen. I wonder if the insurance will cover a new 40 GB instead

Yeah, it isn't new though. No sign of the rumored Apple accessories though... I wonder what they will talk about at the upcoming Expo. Would have to include a new 15" PowerBook for sure...

Just placed my order for the new 40. I have a 30 that is now eBay bound. I figure I should only take about a $80 hit after selling the old. FINALLY I can fit all the music I have. It'll be close, but it should fit.

Sweet!
For my usage though, the mid-range one is still the sweet spot. I had contemplated the 30 GB and may actually have bought it had it been as thin as the 15 GB. However, after playing around with both the 15 and 30 GB I decided I liked the thinner profile of the 15 GB (even though it's only slightly thinner). That and the fact that I would have to be swapping music on and off the iPod from time to time anyway with either iPod, since I keep 5 GB free for data, and my collection is already over 30 GB.
But both are excellent units.

Ya, I like the new ads as well. It's a nice (and colorfull) change from the Apple norm.

*sigh*
I got my 30Gig about a month ago. And I got my parents to get an iMac 2 weeks ago! (you think they'd let them return it for a new model?)
Oh well, such is being a digital product consumer.

that's not the 30-40 change, apple just seems to randomly pick backlight units for the iPods, and sometimes they're blue, and sometimes white. I have a blue 15gb, and i know other people have seen the same

Hopefully it is the day you received it, but I doubt it will be. I ordered mine August 29th and I got it on Friday. I will give them a call tomorrow to find out for sure.

Has any of you guys had a previous I-Pod? If yes, what are you doing with it? Is it that you sell and buy a new one, or do you store the old one???
I am still filling my 20 gig IPod. I would love to have the new one but having two sounds a bit silly.

Instead of eBay, I ended up selling my 30GB to a buddy for $399, and bought the 40GB for $499. I figure a $100 hit for 10 extra (and needed) gigs is a fair deal.
Got a shipment note today from Apple! My 40GB model was picked up this morning by Airborne Express in Shanghai, China. The tracking page says it will be here Sept 12th. 2 Days from China to Vermont, USA. What a small world.

Anyone who had the older version (and now has a slimmer iPod), care to comment on the difference in battery life? It is significant?

I just received my PowerBook G4 12" yesterday and I spend hours filling up iTune in preparation for the upcoming delivery of iPod 20G.
I created playlists in multiple genres (classical, jazz, pop, electronica & soundtracks) selecting only the pieces I really love. Result : I only ended up with 1G worth of music. That leaves me with 19G of empty HD... And that's with over 100 pieces of recordings!! How anyone can fill up 40G iPod is beyond me.
I guess I'm going to install OSX and Norton Utility to make use of all that empty space...

Well, you just said you didn't put all your music on it, just the stuff you really love. I have all my music in iTunes. I have a lot of music to which I listen only occasionally. It's nice to have it on my iPod for that occasion. I use the ratings and smart playlists so I can listen to my favorite stuff.

Yeah, I have two comments. First, the point of the iPod is that you don't have to go through and select all of your favorite pieces -- put everything on! You may find that you like some of the other stuff more than you thought.
Also, why did you get a 30GB model in the first place?

I actually ordered 15G model, but I got a mail from Apple telling me that 15G are out of stock and they are going to have to give me 20G model for the same price. Catch : I have to wait until after 9/25 for the delivery. Sigh...
I was selective with recordings because I didn't I didn't want to fill up my PowerBook HD. I want to check out some music softwares with my PB and I want as much open HD space as possible. Beginner's neurosis, I suppose. Plus, I figured that searching for tracks with an iPod could be pain for me. That's all. Didn't mean to offend anyone. Can't wait for my iPod to arrive though. I love iTunes!!

I don't think you offended anyone. And yeah, 20GB is a lot of space to take up on a PB.

No, nobody's offended, just a little mystified is all. By the way, if you put your iPod in manual mode, it is possible to just keep your music on your iPod and not on your powerbook. (You have to rip the CDs to the powerbook first, but you can delete them once you copy them to the iPod). I wonder if that wouldn't be the best solution for you?

Thanx for the tip. I'll check it out when it arrives in few weeeeeeeeeeks.
Quick question : what do you do to back up the recordings of your iTunes when you upgrade the OS? Can I load up the songs from iPod to Mac or is there some kind of copy restriction limitations that only permits the direction of music copying from Mac to iPod? I checked out Apple site, but I'm still not clear about this problem.
I'm waiting for the Panther, but I don't want to have to go through all that dreadful work again...

You shouldn't have to delete your music just to upgrade the OS.
