Hi everyone, I have a 4 year-old PC (850 Mhz) but I want to buy the new iPod 20 GB. I know it uses USB 2.0, but does anyone know if it will work with USB 1.0 or 1.1? Of course it will be much, much slower, but I am not planning to buy a new PC for probably a few more months, but I still want to enjoy some iPod goodness.

I'm pretty sure that it would. The only thing is, the iPods come with a Firewire cable and a USB 2.0 adapter for the Firewire cable. And I'm not sure if the USB 2.0 connector is the same as a USB 1.x connector. Otherwise, I think you could get a Firewire -> USB 1.x adapter and be OK. But I'm not positive, so double check.

USB 1.1 and USB 2.0 use the same connectors. USB 1.1 is forwards compatible with USB 2.0.
In theory. USB voodoo seems to have replaced SCSI voodoo.
Whether or not the iPod works with USB 1.1 is another story. And even if it does work, it would be slow and probably not officially supported by Apple.

You could always pick up a Firewire PCI card for about the same price as the optional USB 2 cable, giving you a much faster transfer rate and the ability to charge straight from the computer.

The response from the apple store:
Thank you for your inquiry and your interest in the iPod. The 20 GB
iPod will work with a Windows CPU that has either FireWire and/or USB 2.0. USB 1.1 is not supported.
However the web sites, as posted, say that it should work. So I am going to go for it. 20 GB here I come!
