Hey Folks:

Here's a question. I'm about to buy an iPod and after doing a cursory search on the web I have discovered an over-abundance of software out there related to the iPod. I thought I'd go straight to the experts and ask for people's opinions here. So, when I get my iPod, what are the top 10 or 15 best programs to invest in? An annotated list would be the most helpful, of course. Thanks in advance.

There really isn't that much software for the ipod. You can't add apps or games to an ipod, basically what software is available grabs info from the net and puts it in the notes section on the ipod. That's about it...

I don't really think there is enough to have a top 10 or 15 list -- the vast majority of apps are for copying music from the iPod to a computer, although there are some that allow you to put notes or whatever on it as well. As the above poster mentioned, there isn't any software for the iPod itself, beyond what it comes with. Why don't you just look at versiontracker.com and see what programs have good reviews?

My top, er, two:

iPod Viewer 2.0.1 (freeware) - lets you copy songs back to the Mac

iSync 1.1 (Apple freeware) - lets you effortlessly transfer names & addresses from Address Book (and sync with a T68i and Palm, if you have them)

Other good things:

Dragging newspaper article size text files into the "Notes" folder on the iPod - good for lists or casual reading while killing time, and you can listen to music while reading.

Creating a "Backups" folder and dragging in essential files in case your computer crashes or is stolen before you've archived them to CD.
