I know it's easy to import photos from a digital camera with iPhoto, but I don't seem to be able to figure out how to do it with the small mpeg mini-movies.
A friend suggested it was as simple as using iMovie but I don't seem to be able to get that to work.
Any suggestions?

Reply with the movie format (MPEG 1 2 or 4). With that information, someone will be able to better help you.
If it's MPEG 1, search here for threads discussing EyeTV files and iMovie.

Sorry, specifically it's a Canon Powershot S200 and the mini-videos are evidently AVI files, which I think should be playable in Quicktime.
I'm now thinking I need to load the supplied Canon software which I had avoided doing previously, as Apple's iPhoto likes to tout itself as dispensing of the manufacurer's software on many digital camera models, and it does a great job of easy "plug and play" and I was simply hoping that the same was true of these mini-video files.
Perhaps it IS and I just haven't figured it out, as the owner's manual certainly isn't going to tell me NOT to use Canon's software.
Frankly this is also my first use of iPhoto and just the little bit I've used this camera when I go in Finder and look at how it sets up everything when I download images there seems to be a lot of files and redundancy created, obviously taking up hard drive space on my iBook... same for iTunes.
I'm new to these forums and will fish around some more in the archives to see what has been discussed. Though of course if anyone has a quick answer that would be preferable. I did some cursory Google-ing without success.
Thanks

Use image capture... It will allow you to download the movies from your camera. They will end up in Users/$youruserid/Movies

my digital camera mounts like any other disk when I plug it in and I copy pictures and movies with the Finder. Does yours do this or did I just get lucky (mine is Nikon 775)

Mine automatically opens iPhoto as soon as the USB is plugged in, and then it only imports photos; to import the AVI mini-movies I had to do as the other poster advised and use Image Capture.
Seems to me that now that most digital cameras make these mini-movies Apple would come up with something more automatic; perhaps they will.

i'm very surprised apple hasn't come up with anything yet ....
