power mac G4/400 running 10.2.6

i have an external firewire lacie cd burner: 48x24x48. my problem: the tray door will not stay open. this is the case when using iTunes, Toast, and Disk Copy. even when i use the eject button on the drive itself, the door pops open and then closes again immediately!

is this a common problem with a common solution?
