Ok, I was on vacation in Italy till this morning (effectively) and I saw an offer that was impossible to resist. I have seen an Epson Perfection 1660 Photo for 59 Euros! These babies are listed somewhere near 170-180 Euros in Germany so I have had to take it.
The scans are beautiful and it is quite fast. At first I have tried Image Capture which recognized the scanner alright. But it didn't offer many important options, most notably the built-in scan option for negatives and positives. Image Capture started every time I have pressed the scan button (as it is supposed to be).
Epson didn't include a Mac OS X version of their software, although it is available on their web site. Ok, 8 Megs and a modem connection is not funny. But ok.
Now the software seems ok at first. It converts negatives into good-looking positives, recognizes the sizes and everything automatically, but it consistently crashes when scanning more than one image at once (say four negatives)! That is extremely annoying!
Oh, and Image Capture won't start upon pressing the `scan' button. Arrgghh.
Does anyone experience similar problems? Do I have to go with another piece of software? (The software itself would be sufficient, especially all the automatic things are neat (e. g. recognizing the media, recognizing the size of the negatives, etc.).
