I'm in the market for a new MiniDV cam and am wondering what some really good models out there are. Sony has always made great camcorders from my experience, but I'm a little off my game with this subject. Any input would be greatly appreciated!

every review done in the past few months has clearly agreed. you can't go wrong with this unit.... you can, however, save money by buying something cheaper and almost as good

I'm partial to Canons (in that price range, a ZR or Elura), but right now the camera of choice under $1000 is probably the Panasonic GS-70, which is the only one to offer 3 CCDs.

In that price range, I would not pay much attention to the marketing about low-light performance - none of them are very good at it. I also discourage people from concerning themselves with still photo performance - use a separate still camera if you want high-quality stills.
