I feel my iPod 15 GB doesn't get anywhere near the 8 hours it says. I'm sure no one really does.

What shoudl you get, 5 to 6 hours on a single charge.

Well I'm going to test it tomorrow following apple's instrucitons which say import an album at 160 kbps, charge you iPod full, then play the album over and over again, and see how long it lasts.

It says it shoudl last 10 hours if you do that. I assume they mean 8 on the new ones.

anyway, I was wondering if setting an album above 160 takes more battery life?

I mean I import everything as 192... should that affect battery life?

I use the hold button, frequetnly, but I keep the backlight off.

So far the iPod only ran out of juice two times when I needed it.. but I'm just trying to make sure I didn't get a mess up unit.

Wouldn't mind it being messed up so I can get a new 20 if it is.

so anyone try this little experient on the new iPod and if so what did you get?

Also, if should be fun to listen to the same album over and over to know when it stops... it's not like the ipod is going to tell me.

Realistically, Most people switch songs again, and again, and the battery life is shorten,

Out of my 2nd generation iPod I get roughly 8 +or-1 hour. (But my friends 3rd gen only gets 4-5hours and he doesn't change songs as much, since he doesn't have a large audio lib)

Before the 1.3 firmware, I only got 7 hours MAX.

When I just have continuous play on an album I get 10+ of music play.

I am so glad I bought a 2gen iPod and not 3rd generation.

[edit]

When i did this test all my music was incoded in 320K MP3,

But now they are all in 160kACC

My 1st gen iPod (5GB) gets about 9 hours out of each charge. Just above ten hours if I just let it play - If songs are constantly being changed, its about 8.

I'm happy

so 4 to 5 hours of normal usage is normal for the 15 GB ipods?

never quite understand why they do this. Just tell us it's 5 hours, and if we get 8... we will be excited.. but the other way around stinks...

like 6 hours for the ibook... right now my battery gets 1 and 30... i need a new battery, but it never got 6....

I think Apple said 10 hours for 1st-2nd Gens, because their drivers(firmware) wasn't up to scratch and they probably only got 8 but said 10. Now with good drivers/firmware, we get 10 but in "apple" terms that would be 12hours

The reason why the 3rd gen had crap battery life is because, firmware wise, their up to scratch, the battery is smaller, and the output current is less. So bassically you get a smaller iPod at the expense of battery life.

The reason why it wasn't able to meet the 8 hours (most times) is becasue its firmware is very well tuned, thus not being able to improve more on it and exceed current expectation.

Try testing your iPod on nearly silent, and repeat the same song forever.

THEN maybe then you'll get the 8 hours Apple claims.

I'm talking my dad out of buying an iPod right now, untill we see better battery life, He's old, and he's going to whinge little a nancy girl, unless he gets his 8 hours.

I did the test and got about 9 hours of playback when repeating one song over and over...

so I guess that means my iPod battery is okay....

still i won't ocme close to that in real world use...
