I am wanting to buy a new digital camera and am considering 2 models:
the Canon PowerShot G5 5 and the Nikon Coolpix 5400.
Does anyone have an experience with either of these cameras?
I can't afford to spend any more that what these cameras cost.
How is the zoom on these models?
Thank you for the help.

Do you really need the 5 megapixel? The Canon G3 (4 megapixel) is just not good, if not better in certain aspects to the G5. I have a G3 and am totally pleased with it. Plus the prices for them are dirtcheap now and a total bargain. You might want to check www.dpreview.com if you haven't already and check the Canon forum.

I don't know the two cameras you speak of... but I will offer this advice... similar to above... don't just focus on megapixels. After getting a digital camera recently and putting it into use, I recommend...
Focus on the traditional camera numbers... lens speed, shutter speed, exposure adjustment programs, etc. Don't just look at megapixels and zoom.
Among the ones we had narrowed down to, we went with the one with the fastest lens and shutter. And its still not fast enough. Taking action shots inside are too dark or blur from too slow a shutter, for example. I am very glad we didn't go with any of the slower options.
HTH.

I really like the canon G5, very good camera, I have a canon 10D myself, but you can't go very wrong with the Nikon either. I don't know about the zoom of the cameras and the biggest disadvantage of these cameras is the fact that you can't change the lense so your stuck with the standard one but luckely you can use photoshop ( or photoshop LE ) to magnify the image or part of the image ( which only seems to work if you use the highest quality the camera can support ). If you get PS LE with one camera and not with the other, go for that one because the technical differences are not that big anyway. The amount of megapixels is not that important, it's not a good parameter for the quality of the camera...

Well, I also have a G3 and think it's fantastic, and I second going to http://www.dpreview.com and also http://www.dcresource.com .
I actually bought my G3 on the web without having tried one in person, though it's not usually recommended. Having just seen a Coolpix 5400 in a store, I would say you should definitely go try one out and see if that LCD is big enough for you. It seems really dinky compared to the G3's.
As far as the megapixels: you may as well go for more, even if the difference in res isn't huge. 4MP will certainly provide good quality 8x10 prints, but you'll be able to crop more of a 5MP pic and still print it that big.
Good luck.
