Does anyone know who manufactures the current 17" LCD and it's corresponding model number. I recall that samsung and mitsubishi have manufactured them in the past but haven't heard anything about the current ones.

I don't they have one single manufacturer - they switch around based on costs, availability, etc. However, an excellent quality alternative to the Apple 17" LCD might be the Formac Gallery 1740, which is quite cheap right now (just $499 for the ADC version).
