Your iPod has crashed!

Just hold the Menu and Play/Pause buttons at the same time for as many seconds as it takes to reboot it.

This is not uncommon. Just make sure whenever you disconnect the iPod from the Mac, that it has been unmounted/ejected from the desktop (drag the iPod to the trash or right-click on the iPod and select eject).
