I'm trying to set up my parents' scanner back home 400 miles away. They have had a Canoscan N1220U for years now but Mac OS X only about a year and a few months. Since the switch, I haven't been able to find a good solution to scanning for them. I tried Vuescan, but for some reason when I fire it up, everything takes forever to do. Pressing buttons, enabling functions, anything. It drags beyond usability levels. Has anyone else experienced this? Does it change if I pay the $40? Seems like it would be well worth the money, but if this is the performance I'm going to get, forget it. Are there any other solutions out there? My folks don't have Photoshop, so plugins are out of the question. They have an iMac 333 from 1999. Any help you can offer would be appreciated.
Thanks,
D

I have the same exact scanner and vuescan has worked very well for me. I have mine connected to a 1Ghz 15" TiBook, not quite the same machine.... I paid the $40 and love Vuescan... Hope that helps

Has no one else had this slowness problem? If not, I may go ahead and order it in the hopes that it works correctly after using the passcode. Any other solutions?
Thanks,
D

They should get Photoshop Elements (native OS X). For $59 more than VueScan, they get a decent photo editing program with great support for the N1220U.

A photo editing program such as Photoshop Elements works easily, yet you still have to confirm latest update of plug-ins with Canon. I have a canon scanner and canon appears to be lax with there older models and work slowly to correctly updates and drivers for X. Many scan programs have 9 interface, I wish they would just spend some extra time to change UI for X, atleast.
That goes for Wacom too... for a company that promotes artistic design, wheres the UI change for X.

I'm using the Canon "CanoScan Toolbox" from the Canon web site. Just make sure you install the toolbox software first, then the plug-in (driver), or the plug in won't work with the toolbox package.
Worked for me.
