Bought the USB 2 cable for iPod. OS X doesn't like it. Just wondering why.

I got the combo Firewire USB 2 cable for my iPod. (I need an extra cable for work, and the combo cable is the same price as the Firewire-only cable.)
Not that it matters, but I'm just wondering why OS X only sees the data portion of the iPod on my USB TiBook and not iTunes. (I don't have USB 2 support if that matters.)

Ya but why? Is it because of that iTunes loader program in the background? Data transfers work fine via USB.
It doesn't matter with my TiBook, but this would be a big annoyance with owners of old iBooks or PowerBooks.

Hmm, I guess they expect everyone with a Mac would use Firewire so they didn't write drivers.
Perhaps it works with Panther?

So that leaves out anyone with a PowerBook G3 400 (Lombard), iBook G3 366, or older.
And a lot of PowerBook G3 400s are now running G4 500 upgrades, which is OK for basic OS X use.
Not a huge deal, but a potential annoyance anyway for some people, give than the USB option does now exist.

Honestly, I don't think it's anywhere near as many as you think.
Anyone using a 4 year old laptop with OS X is probably going to want to pull their hair out.
I totally agree with Apple pushing FireWire as the primary connection type.
Also, remember what Steve Jobs said way back when they first introduced the original iPod: they didn't go with USB (only USB 1.1 back then) because it didn't provide the user experience they wanted, namely one wire ( no separate power plug) that also copied the data really fast. Since every Mac with USB 2.0 -- the only USB fast enough to provide that user experience -- has FireWire as well.
