I just got the T610 in the UK with an Orange contract. The salesman at Phones4U promised me that the phone was unlocked/sim free and that my contract has global roaming.
So now I find myself in LA for 3 months and does the phone work? No. When I do a manual search for networks I find AT&T and Cingular and they both deny me permission.
I also took the Cingular SIM out of my T68i and put it in the T610. No use, it's locked to Orange.
So obviously I need help. Is there any way for me to unlock this phone using a Mac, possibly over Bluetooth as data cables don't come with it.
If not, any stores in the Beverly Hills, West LA area that do unlocking?

Did you buy it for a lot more than they cost normally? If not, it sounds like you've bought it on a standard Orange contract which needs to have roaming enabled via a call to Orange (150) before you leave the UK.
I've never heard of Orange unlocking a phone before your contract is up (and even then only for an exorbitant fee).
There should be places in LA which will unlock it for you. It'd cost about £10 to get it done in London and there are a heap of places to do it. Unlocking a phone won't have any negative effects on the phone's function either, to my knowledge. I do it each time I get a phone but to do it yourself you need to buy a kit.
Good luck with it.

I bought a T610 on orange today, and as all2ofme says, it is locked to orange. They just don't sell unlocked phones...
As for global roaming, yep you have to call Orange, but you may be able to sort it via their website...
Good luck,
Marc

I already fired off some Emails to Orange and Phones4U complaining about the wrong information given to me by the salesman. Maybe they'll get it working for me. If not I'll force them to replace it with a P900 when I go back to London in January.

Good plan...
I was mis-sold a dual band phone instead of a tri band a while back, kicked up a fuss and got the phone replaced and a few months free line rental...
To me, complaining is always worth a go...!
