Hi, recently my ipod has decided not to unlock itself.

I regularly run with it, and it's been stopping occasionally. When I try and start it again, it won't. I've been using the remote and thought it might be a problem with that, but on the last couple of runs, I've taken the ipod out and tried to unlock it on the main controls. It won't unlock. the lock icon doesn't change and the controls don't work.

The only thing that does work is pressing play and menu to perform a reset. Then it works again for a while before stopping and remaining locked again.

Before I take it back to apple, I just wanted to see if anyone else had seen this.

Thanks,

J.

PS, this is a 2nd gen 10Gb ipod.

Sounds like the OS is crashing to me. I suspect that the jarring of running with it is the culprit, but that's just a guess. But I think it's freezing up, not staying locked.

Damn, I didn't realise this was going to be a problem with it.

Why would jarring cause the os to crash, once it's running I didn't think the os would be on the drive, which is the only section that I guess could be affected by the movement. Everything else is in ram. I could understand it taking time to access new tracks if the disk was bouncing a bit, but I run fairly smoothly. This is happening 2-4 times during a 5 mile run.

I hadn't heard of this happening often, I thought lots of people used their ipods for sport.

Cheers,

J.

where is the ipod when you run ?

Don't strap it to your waist, back and upper arms. Instead, try holding it in your hands as you run. My understanding (from listening to other runners) is that the iPod receives the least amount of shock/vibration if held in the hand and does not skip or show odd behaviours.

I usually have the pod in one of the holders of my fuel belt (drink bottle holder). I don't like to run with it in my hands because it throws out my stride (weight imbalance) and because it gets heavy after a few miles. I usually run 5-8 miles so it's not practical.

I'm amazed I haven't heard of this problem before, as I'm sure loads of people must run with their ipod. What about the ski jacket that burton built with apple. That must take a fair number of bumps and bounces, but I'm sure they haven't had this sort of problem regularly.

Is this well known, or do I have a dodgy ipod?

Cheers for the replies,

J.

I have never heard of this happening, I just made an assumption. But then again, I don't know many runners with iPods, so I can't be a good judge of if this is a common problem.

I would say bring it in to an Apple reseller, and have them look at it. They may just swap it out for you on the spot, and hopefully a new one won't do that.

I've had mine freeze up a few times...I also live and run in Houston. It could be the heat. But I have also heard that if the iPod isn't pretty stationary (ie. on your belt or waist while running) it can't reload the buffer - you need to stop for a sec to let it reload. Obviously, this isn't great if you want to keep a steady pace for a run.
