I can't find the difference between these two earbuds. Can anyone help? I'm trying to buy new earphones for my iPod.

I could be totally wrong, but I believe the SPs are black, while the SLs are white.

I own the SLs and while wonderful for the NYC subway, it's not really good anywhere else. Surely there are better choices.

They say the "SL" is a Minidisc-friendly short cord, the cord coming out of the headphones is much shorter than usual so you can plug them into a remote control. An extender cord is also provided.

Hmmmm....They both have a 0.5m cord, though one is listed as having an extension. Is there any other difference? Isn't there one called LP also?

My Sony EX70 "LP" earbuds don't have an extender cord, just a regular long cord. I'm not sure if there's any other differences. Damn you Sony and your weird product naming schemes! Back in the day three years ago when I got my Sony earbuds, LP was a long cord with no extension and SP/SL was the short cord. I think the Minidisco information is from this era too. It's probably just the color as doshin pointed out.

Based on feedback in this list, I bought the MDR-EX71SL earbuds. I have mixed feelings about the purchase however.

The good: I love the superior sound quality. They are great for air travel as the sound isolation from ambient noise is outstanding.

The bad now not a problem: The feel of earbuds inside the earcanal took some getting used to but one adapts quite easily and the benefit of the sound isolation is great.

The bad: With what are reasonably expensive headphones, Sony includes about a $0.10 plastic box into which one is supposed to store the headphones. So far I have been unable to retrieve the phones from this box without the phone cords becoming a tangled mess. How tough would it have been to provide a better storage solution, say a self winding case that often comes with even the cheapest earbuds.

Then, there is the short cord, extension cord problem which, because of the connector, only adds to the tangle misery. In addition, the connector itself is located at about shirt pocket level and adds weight and thus a feeling of tugging at the earbud.

Bottom line - great sound but frustrating design choices by Sony.

As stated the SL's are white while the others are black. I couldn't get the SL's here in the States a few months ago so I had to order mine form Hong Kong. I think there are several places they can be had now, though.

I have seen a lot of people swear by the Shure E2's but I haven't treid them out. I like the sony's a ihave but I wasn't looking for an audioplhile quality earphone just one that sounded good and had good niose cancelling due to the in ear design. If I wanted better I would probably get the Shure's

I don't think this is quite right. I just ordered the following model from minidisco.com :
Sony MDR-EX71SLW

They also have a EX71SLB

Guess what the "W" and "B" stand for?

I still can't find any info on the SP/SL issue. They both have the short cord.

BTW, the short cord seems to go nicely with the iPod's remote cord. I won't have all the extra cord hanging around. For me, the length of Apple's earbud cords are just right for me. when i add the remote it gets too long for my taste.

Can't wait to get my new buds.

I have the EX71 SL. For the record, they are black and have a short cord (extender provided). They sound great (especially for their size), and block out background noise quite nicely (great on my daily subway/bus rides).

I just got the black EX71SP's (until this thread I didn't know they existed in white, which I might have preferred... oh well, I don't really care). They sound awesome, and because they don't sit in the ear, but rather just the ear canal, they are compatible with the non-lobe ear piercings I have .

Just beware that these behave like earplugs that happen to have little speakers in them -- they block sound very well, so be careful when walking around traffic.

Edit: They also have the nice over-the-neck cord for the right ear, which Sony has been doing for years in their better earphones. Yay!

Yes. This is why I only considered Sony. The "necklace" style cord is an awesome feature. Not only is there less cord hanging in front, and in the way, but when you want to quickly take off the plugs to talk/listen, they just stay there, on your shoulder.

Can't wait for them to arrive....

OK, I was wrong. I looked at the package I have for my SL and it has a W at the end. For some reason I got stuck on the SP's being black and the SL's being white. Now I really have no idea what the difference is then.

Just got a pair of the EX71SL's (white) and I really like em. I have yet to use them for long term listening, which is why I didn't like the Apple ear buds. Apple's would start to hurt my ears after a while. These seems much more comfortable, and with the included different sizes for the ear plugs, it seems like this should be better.

Just to clear some things up:

EX71SL means that the buds come with a 0.5m cord (short cord), and a 1.0m extension.

EX51SP means that the buds come with the 0.5m cord ONLY, so there is no extension! This means that you either have to use it with a remote, or you have to have the player near your ears.

EX71LP means that it comes with a 1.2m cord (long cord).

The W and B defines, as said before, the colour.

The EX71 earbuds are only available in SL and LP, in black and white. The EX51 earbuds are only available in SP and LP, in black, silver, and red. As you might have guesses, the EX51's are the low-budget version of the EX71's.

I hope this helps

FYI, here in the U.S., Sony only markets two models of in-ear earbuds:

EX71SL (short cord and extension) and
EX51LP (long cord)

Both come only in black here.

So anyway, the code appears to be

nxyz, where:
-n is the model number (EX51 or EX71)
-x is the cord length (S=0.5m, L=1.2m)
-y is whether an extension is included (L=1.0m extension, P=none)
-z is the color

P.S. My iPod finally arrived today, and I'm happy to report that my EX71SL's are a perfect match... the short cord is perfect. And as it turns out, the black isn't such a bad thing... it lets me easily tell which end of the iPod remote is which!

P.P.S Where did you see the EX71LP? Not even Sony Japan's website lists that.

I don't know if they are available in the US, but they are in Europe, or at least the Netherlands. I've seen them in stores quite often.

Enjoy your new buds
