Well I decided to give my reactions to the iPod 3rd gen of using it for 6 months. I really think it is the best solution for what we have available, however there could be improvements.

Likes:
Small, easy to use when driver the car.
Very durable, drop it a couple times with no problems.
Quick to update

Dislikes:
Sometimes the buttons ..don't..
Scratches easy
Had charging issues

One item I really love is the Griffin car adaptor:

http://catalog.belkin.com/IWCatProdu...duct_Id=149006

It has a built it amplifier and volume control (line out) for a car aux adaptor, Which I feel should have been built into the iPod to begin with.

Another product I like is a silicon skin case which will protect the case from scratches and cusions for those inevidible drops.

Like to hear what other people's overall reaction is.

I have that very same car charger. However, it is quite obviously on Belkin's website, not Griffin's

I've also had my 3G iPod for about six months.

What I like:
Ratings on the fly!
Small size vs. older iPods
Backlight is awesome
Super easy to use
Durable
Hard drive doesn't spin constantly when connected to the computer but not mounted. I can actually charge the iPod with my computer. With my older 5 GB iPod that I don't have anymore, I had to connect it to the AC adapter in order to charge it, because whenever it was connected to the computer, the hard drive was CONSTANTLY spinning.

What I don't like:
On The Go playlists are stupid
New games are stupid
I'd like a better implementation of the To-Do list that lets you mark items "Done" or "Not done."
Battery life isn't as good as my old iPod
Touch buttons are crappy compared to the older versions, although I do like the touch scroll wheel.
Chokes on a few of my songs, REALLY annoying. I tried to listen to one today that seemed to always work before, and it stopped after 3 seconds. When I tried fast forwarding past the troublesome spot, it choked, froze for about ten seconds, then played it for a little while longer before stopping again. Sometimes it just goes straight to the next song with this particular problematic one. Also, when I tried playing it, my battery indicator went from 3 bars to 0 bars. Yes, I have applied the 2.0.1 update, which fixed a number of my unplayable songs.

"That's Mama Luigi to you, Mario!" *wheeze*

How do you change ratings on the 3G iPod???

This is what I was looking for and I can't figure it out.

I have the same charger too. It's very nice. Although, I'm having some grounding issues with my setup. I think it's because I have my line in running into the stereo unit (not a tape adapter).

I've been looking for just the right case. You mention a silicon skin case? Could you provide a link? I'm looking for something that is thin, flexible, which doesn't detract from the iPods small size and good looks.

Press the middle button on the scroll wheel twice when a song is playing (I believe), and it will change to a screen where you can choose from 1 to 5 stars.

My biggest gripe is that actions will sometimes take a while to work. Like going to the Artist category seems to take 3-4 seconds on my 40GB iPod, which is just long enough to make you think that maybe you didn't press well enough, so you try again, which mean you end up going farther than you wanted... I think this may just be because of the sheer number of songs.

I experience the same thing. I am almost positive it's because of the number of things it has to list. I have a 30GB, and it's almost full of music.

Hopefully Apple can improve the database querying so that it doesn't have to read the list every time, it can maybe load it into memory at boot up or after a sync or something. Here's to hoping.
